Patriotic CDV of a boy beating a drum. Title is "To Arms! Freemen to Arms!" Photographer is John P. Soule. It's copyrighted 1862 by W.M. Hunt (not sure why Soule didn't copyright it, unless Hunt is the artist who depicted the boy).

The first photograph was a view from a window in France taken in 1826. The commercially successful photograph started with the daguerreotype introduced in 1839. Today all sorts of photographs and photographic equipment are collected. Albums were popular in Victorian times. Cartes de visite, popular after 1854, were mounted on 2 1/2-by-4-inch cardboard.
